Synopsis: (WARNING! SPOILERS!)
The story opens with Nightwing receiving
word that a "guy in a costume"
is beating up the suspect of
a crime in Bludhaven.
The guy turns out to be Azrael,
who has evidently
lost his mind (again) and resumed
his previous
identity of Batman II, the ultraviolent
vigilante.
We are told that he is dying
of a blood disorder,
and he is clearly confused and
disoriented.
Later in the story he actually
hallucinates
an encounter with a messenger
from his old
order. After an initial encounter,
Nightwing
is informed by Oracle that Azrael
recently
visited the Cave and "hit
Alfred."
This annoys Nightwing to no end,
but Azrael
manages to escape after a brief
chase. He
then, naturally, returns to the
Cave where
there is a confrontation between
him and
the real Batman. The climax of
the story
is the fight between these two.
Just as Batman
has his hands around the throat
of his former
ally, there is a voice shouting
at him from
off the panel (Nightwing?), and
then the
story continues in Azrael.
Analysis:
Cover: (4 of 5 cowls)
The cover is colorful and action packed,
though I'm not sure the orange works with
the color scheme. Still, it's another nice
job by Brian Boland, who has helped to define
this series with his excellent cover art.
Story: (5 of 5 cowls)
Devin Grayson continues to show that she
can write great action stories as well as
amazing character-driven stories. Batman
and Nightwing both have wonderful lines in
this episode. And who wouldn't be entertained
by the big showdown with Batman at the end?
It's definitely got me wanting to look at
the next issue of Azrael, which is a title
I never read.
Artwork: (5 of 5 cowls)
I hope Roger Robinson stays on
this title
when Devin leaves because I love
his work.
Lots of nice kicks in the fight
scenes, and
the chase scene is good too.
As usual, the
pencils are perfectly complemented
by the
inks and colors. Don't change
what you are
doing here, folks.
Backup Story by Alexander and Haynes:
1 out of 5. A pointless practical joke featuring
Harley Quinn. Not funny and not worth reading.
